This old butcher in Terowie, a near-ghost town, interested me. In a local history museum I saw a photo of the original town butcher, also called Mahoneys so the store has obviously been in the family a long time – it was built in the late 1800′s! It must have been an important part of the community at the time, and it is interesting that it’s closed now. I wonder if the Mahoney sons’ sons just weren’t interested in being butchers, or maybe it became too hard to make a living as people left the town looking for work in other places.
There was so much to look at – inside the store, this great old formica table with chrome railings – I bet someone would pay a fair bit to include that with their retro decor.
I was careful to get the reflections in the window as visible as possible, to add to the sense of place. I like the faded plastic fruit and meat and dusty take-away cups in the front counter for some reason.
Looking at closed up old shops like this, I get an almost overpowering urge to get in somehow and explore and take photos!
